The opening of Umm Zakiyyah’s trilogy is intriguing.
“I’m tired of this!” Tamika kicked her dormitory room door in disgust. Her roommate’s clothes were thrown carelessly about the room. A pair of shorts still lay untouched on her roommate’s desk. They had been there for two days already. Blond hair strands had begun to gather into dust balls under Jenifer’s bed”. It captivates the reader’s attention and urges them to read on.
The trilogy is set in America in the mid nineteen nineties upward. The trilogy doesn’t really have a main character as it is written in the third person but it tells the impact of Islam on the characters’ lives. The trilogy tells of a story that will thug on to the reader’s heart‘s strings forever. It also discusses debatable issues in a very knowledgeable and understanding manner.
Umm Zakiyyah, an outstanding writer whose reputation is growing fast, excels in this kind of narrative. She has shown in her novels that she is a master storyteller with a flair for suspense and a feeling for new Muslim reverts.
The story starts with Tamika a born again Christian who is sent to go and live with two Muslim girls which will now change her life forever. This story will change every reader’s life. If you are a Muslim, you’ll be glad you are and if you are not, the books assure you can still be granted this beautiful gift of light.
The trilogy deserves to be widely read and enjoyed. There are lessons to be learnt in each of the books. I found them well- written with a thoughtful observation of what new Muslim reverts can go through. Umm Zakiyyah is definitely a writer to watch, now and in the future.
